Travel Machine

Theresa Schieder, a 2nd year Master student in International Tourism at the Università della Svizzera italiana and a student assistant of the webatelier.net lab has just started her internship in Berkeley, California (US). Check Theresa’s first impressions:

“The company I am working for is called AM+A ‘Aaron Marcus and Associates’. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) as well as User Experience Design (UXD) are its main activity fields. In the past, the company’s founder and president, Mr. Aaron Marcus, has already collaborated with several renowned companies, such as Nokia, Siemens, BMW, SAP, Microsoft or Apple.

I am now leading a project that focuses on the development and design of a new mobile application for tourism, which will be called the Travel Machine. Together with my American and Chinese colleagues, we are trying to create an app that shall provoke a shift of people’s travel behavior from leisure towards cultural tourism and that shall foster intercultural understanding and learning when visiting foreign destinations. We are currently carrying out an extensive benchmarking and competitive analysis, as well as a market research in collaboration with students of the international university UC Berkeley Extension.
Of course, the location of my current workplace is also more than ideal for someone who loves traveling: San Francisco is about 30 minutes away by train, and it takes just one hour more to get to San Diego or Los Angeles by plane. Since I have never been to the U.S. before, it is quite impressive and overwhelming for me to experience cities of such dimensions – still I think I will appreciate even more Lugano’s calm and relaxing atmosphere when I will come back in September!”
