A new Augmented Reality channel named “Greenway Lugano” about hiking trails in Lugano, Switzerland, has been published in the mobile application layar.com. Students from the Master in International Tourism at USI skilled at various technological tools during the course eTourism Lab 2012-2013 tutored by Prof. Cantoni, Dr. Elena Marchiori. The project was assisted by Hazique Gul Memon, Fabienne Boegli, and Sergio Jimenez Valdes who helped in developing the Greenway Lugano app supported by the Rotary Club Lugano.
The didactic experience contributed also to the Tourism Education Future Initiative – TEFI2013 Conference in Oxford Brookes University. The paper presented at TEFI2013 outlined how the Augmented Reality project, part of a Master course on eTourism, create an opportunity to foster community engagement with local tourism actors, and practical learning for students.
The Augmented Reality app is now available for iPhone, iPad, and Android in Italian language. Very soon the English and German language versions will be published. Tourists in Lugano can use the Greenway Lugano app not only for identifying the points of interest but also to get information about the locations and theirs surroundings. With options of destinations’ description, attractions, places to eat and how to get there; this platform makes hikers one click away from their destination.
How to use the Greenway Lugano app:
• Download “Layar.com” app which is available on Android and Apple store.
• After downloading, open the app and search on Geo Layers Search: “Greenway Lugano” and select it, and discover Lugano’s hiking trails using the augmented reality.
